GOSSIP GIRL

DAILY GOSSIP DISH

Chloe Burns

Finally!

Bristol Palin has popped. The daughter of embattled one-time vice-presidential hopeful Sarah Palin gave birth to a baby boy on Sunday in her hometown of Palmer, Alaska. The 18-year old Bristol, who caught a lot of flak for getting pregnant although she isn’t married to daddy Levi Johnston, named the little boy Tripp Easton Mitchell Johnston. And no, she wasn’t being ironic. Meanwhile, the new parents are planning a summer wedding, as they are both still busy finishing up their high school diplomas. Continue…

YOUR GUIDE TO ASIANS IN FASHION NOW

Bee-Shyuan Chang

When I flip or troll through the latest fashion mags, I can’t help but be proud of the multitude of Asian models, designers and industry elite. Especially after a brave foray into the Opening Ceremony sample sale this past weekend, where a hipper than thou crew of California Asian Americans and happa princes and princesses smoothly ran the show, I was inspired to get creative, perhaps making my own t-shirts via a silkscreening class or busting out my sewing machine. While my own fashion endeavors are but budding, here at FABRIC we’ve compiled a handy dandy Guide to Asians in Fashion Now, complete with photos and brief bios of our favorite Asian fashion insiders. A TRIBUTE

STEPHEN SPROUSE X LOUIS VUITTON, SPRING 2009

Bee-Shyuan Chang

Amidst depressing fashion news such as Bill Blass shutting down shop and Mischa Barton’s new headband line, it has been difficult lately to get excited about fashion. Much like a sweaty yoga session, perhaps this firestorm has a similar purpose: to burn off the excess. What we are left with then are designers with talent and lines with a vision. That is the hope at least. Along with our shopping mix of consignment pickings, sample sales and thrift finds, special editions offer a wallet-deserving look. Late graffiti artist Stephen Sprouse’s collaboration with Louis Vuitton, was one of the early art world and luxury wear love affairs. The result was handbags and other accessories that today are still collectible–just check out Ebay. Continue…

RYAN MCGINLEY IN MARC JACOBS?

THE NEW PHOTOG MODEL

Bee-Shyuan Chang

My, my how the lenses have turned. I opened up a surprisingly flimsy cover of the January issue of Vogue today and what do I see but photographer maintenant Ryan McGinley in a sudsy tub balancing a Marc Jacobs shoe. Juergen Teller, the photographer genius behind the cheeky Victoria Beckham shots for Marc Jacobs, has turned his now trademark overexposed style to capture McGinley in his first fashion campaign. Who next, Bruce Weber? Or with better luck, one of the Marios, Testino or Sorrenti? We’ll let you choose. Continue…

HIT THE SLOPES!

APRES SKI

Bee-Shyuan Chang

Whew, it’s Thursday. Thank god there is only one more day left before the weekend, when you can hightail it out of the city and hit the slopes where you can breathe deep the clean mountain air and feel the wind rush against your face. You can see what sort of afternoon imaginations are running wild at corporate desks everywhere. Even if you aren’t the double black diamond type, there’s always the saving grace of looking good. Pull yourself together from the slope to the fireplace with onesies by Burton, parkas by Moncler, hand cream by (MALIN+GOETZ) and accessories by Chanel. Continue…

A BIT OF COPENHAGEN FUN

MOONSPOON SALOON

Bee-Shyuan Chang

I went to an amazing Danish Christmas party this past weekend, whereupon deep in conversation with a stylish Dane over cups of gløgg, we completely agreed Henrik Vibskov is a genius. While labels like Staerk, Ivan Grundahl and Noir have transformed Copenhagen into a fashion hothouse for perfect draping, clean lines and cultured minimalism, Vibskov is the unpredictable one-eyed jack showing everything from outlandish men’s tights to a simple double lapel black cardigan. Carrying on the Danish torch for sometimes crazy, sometimes breathtaking fashion, is the art and fashion collective Moonspoon Saloon. Created by collaborators Sara Sachs, Tal R., Noam Griegst and Melanie Buchhav, Moonspoon debuted an anything-goes, 14-piece collection of patchwork onesies, ballooning parkas and artfully decorated tops for Spring/Summer 2009. STAYING ON TREND

THE STATEMENT CHAPEAU

Bee-Shyuan Chang

What do you do when you get a bad haircut? On the first day, you chide yourself for aspiring to be Kate Moss’ doppelganger. (A shaggy fringe of bangs just doesn’t work on everybody.) Second, you pity yourself for spending so much money that would have been better spent on more practical things: like a new party dress. On the third day, you’ve pulled yourself together with an hour of yoga and become resolved for some emergency action. Ponytails can work for some days, but when you want to feel with it, mix it up with a statement chapeau. Continue…

PRODUCT (RED)

WOOD WOOD STYLE

Bee-Shyuan Chang

As the runways and the politicos would have it, red is the statement color of the season, which makes supporting (RED), a global fund fueled by shoppers that buy (RED) products, all the more savoir faire. This year the (RED) initiative continues its fight against AIDS in Africa, but has branched out from household names like Gap and Apple, with products from new young collaborators. We’re most excited about cool kid Danish label, Wood Wood’s take on the classic Chuck Taylor. Continue…

THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT

RANDOM FASHION THOUGHTS

Bee-Shyuan Chang

The other day I read an article in WWD.com that discussed how magazines are rethinking their strategies as even the big boys and girls of the publishing world (Vogue, Vanity Fair, Cosmo, and pals) were suffering huge decreases in print ad sales. Then there was the news that the Tribune company, owners of the L.A. Times and Chicago News Tribune, is considering filing for bankruptcy. These are not times to be fatally optimistic. Yet there are these old stalwarts who issue statements like this: “‘Print is more important than ever,’ said David Lauren, Polo Ralph Lauren Co.’s SVP of advertising, marketing and corporate communications, at Thursday’s [12/5/08] WWD Media Summit in New York, a sentiment expressed equally strongly by Hearst Magazines president Cathie Black. The current situation is hardly a total implosion of the magazine industry, executives and observers insist.” Continue…
