MAKE A STATEMENT

CHRISTOPHER LEE SAUVE

Bee-Shyuan Chang

Here’s a bit of uplifting fashion news. Take solace in a statement tee by artist Christopher Lee Sauve. The supersoft cotton tee comes in men’s sizes, but seeing as how young labels tend towards the unisex these days, we’re all for sharing. If you’re still floating above the recessionary firestorm, then grab a “Save Anna” tee. Perez Hilton loves it as much as he seeks Amy. Continue…

C.NEEON

THE SHORT LIST

Bee-Shyuan Chang

The fantasyland of couture has come to a close, and now without missing a well-heeled step, we’re back to reality with Berlin Fashion Week. The designers are a smattering of rather commercial, burgeoning and the young avant garde. Notably Bernhard Willhelm is showing, but we’re also excited about Berlin-based C.Neeon. Continue…

FASHION NEWS

Inès de la Fressange, the original Karl Lagerfeld Chanel muse, will be taking to the runways today for her good friend Jean Paul Gaultier. The still svelte and elegant mother of two (and current collaborator at Roger Vivier) is defying questions of model longevity at 52. Kate Moss, you’re officially challenged. [Grazia] Continue…

PARIS PARIS, AVEC COLETTE

BENJAMIN BIXBY

Bee-Shyuan Chang

Kanye West may have kicks with Louis Vuitton, but musician-actor-designer André Benjamin (aka André 3000 of Outkast) is one step ahead with his preppy yet nostalgic menswear line, Benjamin Bixby. Bixby premiered at Barneys last year for Fall/Winter 2009. Now his designs are taking the international route via hip Parisian retailer Colette, where his line will share hanger space with labels such as Kris Van Assche, Sacai and Lanvin. Considering the generally somber mood of the menswear shows, Continue…

PARIS MENSWEAR: DESIGNERS TO WATCH

Bee-Shyuan Chang

The Milan menswear season passed with Thom Browne stealing the show and coming home with a firmly established European fanbase. Otherwise, the fashion writers have been noting the more conservative looks on the Italian runways. Now the editors are heading towards Paris, where adding a bright spot to the young designers topography are rising stars Damir Doma and Yohan Serfaty. Continue…

GETTING DRESSED

THE INAUGURATION

Bee-Shyuan Chang

Never mind what Michelle Obama is going to wear, you have enough on your plate for that. Higher up the personal totem pole is what are you going to wear? With the Recession–the letter “R” is having a seminal year– the inauguration this coming Tuesday is arguably the event of the year. After living in DC for three years, I can say with a fair amount of experience that what you should wear depends on what your agenda is. Continue…

THOM BROWNE X COLETTE

Bee-Shyuan Chang

What’s the best plan for a recession? Find strength in numbers. Thom Browne of abbreviated suit fame is setting up a pop-up shop with my favorite fashion store in the world, Colette. The Parisian retailer will be offering Browne’s entire Spring/Summer 2009 collection of tenniswear-inspired separates from January 17th to February 14th. If his Tribeca flagship with its private tailormade suits in the back and $5000 price tags are any indication, Browne is redefining the panache of bespoke. Continue…

SPRING/SUMMER ACCESSORIES

HOUSE OF WARIS

Bee-Shyuan Chang

I’m really digging jewelry line, House of Waris‘ Spring/Summer collection. Perhaps you caught a glimpse of designer-actor Waris Singh Ahluwalia in The Darjeeling Limited alongside the knobby-nosed shenanigans of Owen Wilson. In the fashion world, however, he is simply known as Waris and is often seen about town with girlfriend Chiara Clemente, daughter of artist Francesco Clemente. For this coming Spring/Summer, his most recent collection for his cult jewelry line is inspired by the avian motifs of Hôtel Raphael in Paris. Continue…

NYC SHOPPING: DEBUT

Staff

A newcomer to Nolita’s bevy of indie stores, the gallery-like boutique Début brings a new concept to the marketplace: the centrally located retail space is a brick-and-mortar stepping stone for young designers to launch their collections into the market. (We would say it’s the New York equivalent of London boutique Beyond the Valley, one of our favorites.) We spoke with owner Lisa Weiss about her innovative concept. Continue…

GET YOUR PONG ON

Bee-Shyuan Chang

I took my Jewish boyfriend home for the first time this past Christmas. After delicious Taiwanese food, gifts and digestifs, my 5’2″ uncle walks directly to my boyfriend, looks up and asks, “Do you play ping pong?” to which he replied, “Yes, but I’m not so good.” “Oh okay,” my uncle said, “Keep practicing then,” giving him a wan smile and a obligatory clap on the back before walking away. Taiwanese Christmases aren’t the only reason to brush up on your Pong. Edward Norton plays, so does Susan Sarandon. Now the fashion world is stepping up their game, by putting a trip to NYC on the line. Beat master ping-pong player and high heel man Stuart Weitzman and win a trip to NYC courtesy of Zappos.
