Best New Fashion Collaboration: Richard Nicoll for Fred Perry
Amongst the things to do aside from runway during Paris Fashion Week include indulging on pain au chocolats, having un biere at La Perle and chowing down on Moroccan goodness at Chez Omar. But Paris especially lends itself to random walking and ditching of itineraries. As such, we stopped by not a runway show, but a buyer’s route of sorts by checking out the best new collab we’ve heard in awhile. Brit designer Richard Nicoll has teamed up with Fred Perry for a Laurel Wreath Collection for SS11. The dresses come in dreamy colorblocked pastels (that referenced the Central Saint Martin alum’s more vividly hued Spring 2009 collection) and some splashier prints. We’re particularly happy that the British heritage brand is finally paying attention to womenswear. “We started by looking at Ken Russell’s portraits of Teddy Girls in the ’50s who were influenced by Edwardian style,” Nicoll commented. There’s a textural play to the collection too, using lurex piqué, brocade cottons and jersey, that the designer describes as “a clash of sport with ’50s couture elements.”
