FALL Fashion FOR FRIDAYS – Our Neighbors Up North

Staff

Save for hockey and Pamela Anderson, Canucks often get the short end of the stick. But with Flair magazine turning up the fashion heat and some underground photography talent developing in the sparsely populated country, perhaps some remove from the hustle bustle of the center of the world (aka New York City) can do some good. Take this fall editorial by up and coming Canadian talent Florence Leung. The autumn textures are beautiful and with the cold spell this NYC Friday, just right up our alley. Continue…

Vogue Turkey Goes Black and Red for November Issue

Staff

If you haven’t heard, Turkey is fashion’s latest and greatest country love affair. There’s Turkish-born, London-based designer Hakaan that has Carine Roitfeld and a bevy of supermodels swooning in his lap. And now Vogue Turkey has been making some leaps in the fashion editorial department. Take this sneak peek at the November 2010 issue with Gwen Loos. We’re loving the Raggedy Ann meets Anna Wintour meets Mariacarla Boscono bob and if there ever was a way to iron home the point that black and red go together, this Mariano Vivanco-lensed spread does it. Continue…

‘I LOVE ANOREXIA’ Gets Satirical

Staff

Skinny fashion girls please don’t take our title to heart, especially when the title in question is courtesy of fashion provocateur aleXsandro Palombo. The illustrator takes on the typical fashion plate eating disorder accusations and adds a cheeky spin. For all those who think Rachel Zoe and Victoria Beckham could do with a few more sandwiches under their belts, say “I”. Continue…

FRIDAY FUN

‘DON’T TOUCH ME OR I HIT YOU WITH MY HANDBAG!’

Staff

We’re loving the resurgence of fashion illustration. Call it a backlash to ultra-Photoshopped, er, polished photos of blank model stares, but a great satirical illustration is the perfect representation of fashion: fun, funny and fabulous. After all in this extenuated recession, what’s a bit of materialism if you can’t be tongue in cheek? Get your dose of the 3 F’s with this latest set by Brussels-based illustrator Achraf Amiri. It may bring the “It” handbag girl back out of you. Continue…

Photographer to Watch Caius Christoe in Fiasco #5

Bee-Shyuan Chang

Fiasco magazine has turned into quite the hotbed of photographer and stylist talent – all of which makes sense considering founder Vincent Nord is an accomplished lensman himself. We were perusing through the latest issue of Fiasco, #5 Lost, when we chanced upon Caius Christoe. The Australia native turned New York resident plays with the focus of his attentions in this menswear spread Walk This Way. We wouldn’t say it’s quite Aerosmith, but the effect is eye-catching. Continue…

Models on Film: D1 Models and Offworld Projects Collaborate

Staff

Being that models most often want to be actors, why not try out the chiseled darlings on film? That might have been the thought behind London’s D1 Models when they teamed with Offworld Projects on this beautifully done editorial short.  Aside from inspiring us to plot some deep-in-the-country fun this fall, we’re digging the soundtrack. And while we do love show packages, we enjoyed this artistic version as well. Should more modeling agencies take note? Continue…

Marchesa SS11 Wedding Collection Is For the Best Kind of Bridezilla

Bee-Shyuan Chang

Having spent a summer with my boyfriend (note, not fiancé) during the thick of wedding season, even this admittedly not-that-romantic writer was prone to some daydreaming. That exactly, it seems, is the crowd that Marchesa knows just how to tickle. The label by Keren Craig and Georgina Chapman is known for their stunning evening wear (which up close, was the most beautifully crafted American collection this past Spring 2011 season) and that floaty, dreamscape aesthetic has transferred quite perfectly into Spring 2011 wedding gowns. Some of the styles such as the one with white beading on the neckline up to the collar  (look 19) are white editions of SS11 main collection designs, others are riffs off the classic Marchesa corset with swirling tulle rosettes – I had a soft spot for look 15. Also, this season, the short numbers looked particularly fresh, perhaps for the best kind of sporty bridezilla with gams to spare. Continue…

A MAN'S WORLD

DUTCH Model Bastiaan Van Gaalen Looks Smashing In A Tube Dress

Chris Peake

Sure we’ve been reading that manly men are back, but we still don’t mind some androgyny here and there especially if it involves the leonine features of Dutch model Bastiaan Van Gaalen and some Raf Simons. The oft-spotted GQ favorite took a turn in an edgier mag with photographer Greg Gex for the latest issue of The End. Shot with a sandalwood fan that would make Chinatown mommies proud, Gaalen looks luscious right down to his trenchcoat tube dress.   Continue…

A GIRLISH REVERIE

Staff

There may be a chill to the air outside, but we were still caught up with this girlish, light on the clothes, spread by photographer Alice Rosati. It does feature plenty of pretty underthings perfectly for playing makeup aside a roaring fire. Continue…

Nicola Formichetti’s Latest Fashion Video Is Like The Best Nightclub Ever

Chris Peake

Video has the fashion kids busy these days and though it’s been awhile since the YouTube/Vimeo era kicked off, we’ve seen one too many too serious style vids. That’s why we like this latest effort by creative Mariano Vivanco and director Luca Finotti for Hercules magazine issue 9 (on newstands now). It has a great track (Remedy by Crookers featuring Miike Snow), it’s trippy in a way that reminds us of nights out partying way too late, and there’s some stunning imagery with the help of stylist Nicola Formichetti – we’re particularly a fan of Amanda Laine’s mysterious look.
