New Orleans may have been torn down by Hurricane Katrina, but the cultural rebuild ever since has  been both innovative and inspiring. Given the perpetual challenge of financially supporting the arts, the Antenna Gallery of New Orleans has come up with a unique way to bring in funds. Robin Atkinson, a curator and member of the cooperative gallery, had the idea to have a show that features art sold by the inch.

Antenna’s most recent show, which opened Saturday, November 14 in the St. Claude Arts District, allows patrons to buy sections of an interpretive drawing of Hieronymus Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights. Created by a group of local artists who work with Antenna, the drawing enlarged the originally small dimensions of the hallucinatory painting to a monumental size.

Visitors to the gallery, using cardboard frames, can select portions anywhere on the drawing to cut out and buy as is. The prefab frames range from ten to one hundred dollars, but different and larger amounts are allowed and encouraged. At the price of $1 per square inch, these works on paper are incredibly affordable.

Antenna’s accessible artworks are on limited offer though. Courtney Egan, a member of the collective, explained that the gallery does not run off traditional artwork sales, and has to be creative to stay afloat.

The Garden of Earthly Delights Drawing Show is on view until December 6 at Antenna Gallery
