The two great American subcultures: surf bums and skate punks come together in SURF/SKATE at Clic Gallery this summer. Nearly all of the artists featured are skaters or surfers themselves making for a truly personal experience. Montauk surf king Tony Caramanico, legendary surfer/artist, who published “Surf Journals” last year, New Yorker Paul Solberg, who documented the thriving surfer culture in Munich, and Hawaiian Pete Cabrinha, a surfing god best known for setting a world record for highest wave surfed (70 feet) will have works featured at this exhibit.

On the other half of the exhibit, photographers who have immortalized skate culture, including Drew Carolan, who photographed punk kids and skaters at CBGBs and on Astor Place, and New York native, Alberto Vargas, whose fantastic shots of his friends practicing skate tricks under the BQE has earned him a Soho gallery show at age 17. “There is something about pressing that shutter at that exact moment where the board touches the rail , or the skater flicks or catches the board that I love capturing.” says teen prodigy Vargas of his subjects.

And for all you former skaters who start to feel a little nostalgic, or for those who feel so inclined, Clic gallery will be featuring 30 limited edition skate decks designed by Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst and Takashi Murakami. The exhibit opens on July 27 and will run until September 5th.
