Lillian Bassman’s Haute ‘Women’

Suzanne Shaheen

November 3, 2009

If couture and high fashion photography is your thing then acclaimed fashion photographer Lillian Bassman’s exhibit, Women, at the Staley Wise Gallery is a must see. The show consists of Bassman’s work throughout her career, including images she made for Harper’s Bazaar in the 1950s, as well as her more recent work published in the New York Times. Although the show includes work from exceptionally contrasting periods in fashion, Bassman’s consistent use of stark contrast in her black and white prints as well as her fashion illustrations weaves a thread through the exhibit.

As the title implies, all the prints are of women—specifically models. Each of these women are just as beautiful as the next, not only because of all the attributes we associate with models, but because of Bassman’s framing and the subtle glowing quality that she has bestowed on these beauties. The elegant and romantic photographs evoke the most delicate and whimsical allure of femininity. And the ageless beauty consistently viewed within all of Lillian Bassman’s photographs will leave you feeling as luminous as the photographs on the wall.
