Joy Division and New Order? If it was Hemingway, he’d say, “Not bad.” Although records have been replaced by MP3 files and Apples iTunes, the album art from LPs show how graphic design can transgress into art and vice versa. One of the notables of this rare breed of graphic designer is Brit Peter Saville who was the house record sleeve designer for Factory Records. He’s so notable he’s even featured in the movie 24 Hour Party People, a 2002 movie based on the rise of Factory Records where he is notoriously and comically late for his deadlines.
But then again, why rush genius? Arkitip, an LA-based publisher of multi-format magazines with a guest curator for each issue, thinks so too. The latest issue, No. 0049, is curated by Saville and includes a virtual catalog of his work including notes and essays from his colleagues. It’s a little piece of music history for the coffee table.
Arkitip No. 0049, Peter Saville
