If you’re interested in seeing abstract photography in one of its most beautiful and well-executed forms then head to the Leica Gallery, on 670 Broadway, to see Italian photographer Renato D’Agostin’s book and exhibit Tokyo Untitled. D’Agostin’s photographs concentrate not on the colorful landscape and people, which one generally associates with Japanese culture, but rather are subtle black and white documentations of forms and light.
D’Agostin’s depiction of the bustling city are through images shot from varying angles and composed with a photographic eye. In this series, human society is not D’Agostin’s concern. Instead, he is enthralled with the world of lines, circles, and the light. The traces of human forms are used more as a composition in this series and are either blurred, silhouetted, shadows of figures, or isolated parts of their body. Faces are hidden from the viewer, lending a mystery to the portrayed subjects.
Accompanying the exhibit is the photographer’s recent art book titled under the same name. When you flip through Tokyo Untitled, there is a sense of being engulfed in blurred human forms, sharp lines, and geometric forms. Plus, in book form, you can take home the visual experience with you.
