Staff

September 29, 2010

Not that we’re the shallow sort, but we admittedly work in an industry when looks count. Which is why, sometimes we’re slightly befuddled that when it comes to beauty, there has been some cumbersome packaging as of late – often too girly, or just plain childish. Not so for these 10 sexy, sleek stunners whose gorgeous exterior are a match for treasured products within. Check out our top 10 here.

ELLIS FAAS

Can you say phallic? Putting rotund foundations to shame, cult beauty label Ellis Faas delivers its mineral-infused Skin Veil foundation (left) in this very sleek pen. (Available at Space NK for $65.) For those who love their colored beauty buys, Faas also offers creamy eye shadow and lipstick in the same packaging. And if that weren’t aesthetically pleasing enough, you can store your new purchases in this futuristic cylindrical case. (Right, at Space NK for $35)

DAVINES

This sustainability-minded haircare company from Parma, Italy actually started out as research laboratory. The brand is proof, however, for what a design can do for lab results. We particularly love this eye-catching design for its “For Wizards” collection. Available at Barneys New York.

JEAN PATOU

An oldie but a goodie, Patou’s flacons are the perfect marriage of clean design with a touch of luxe. The gold topper gives the squared off shape just the golden touch. $115 at Perfume.com

COMME DES GARCONS

It’s easy to say this is a no-brainer, but think of how many fashion brands whose fragrance delivery is less than mediocre. Comme des Garcons’ exterior has just enough intrigue to perfectly reflect the uniquely scented interiors. Comme des Garcons series 3 intense, available at Colette for $76.45

SHU UEMURA

The Japanese company may have shuttered its U.S. outposts, but devotees of fine formulations can still shop to their heart’s content online. That’s certainly well and good for those who appreciate the clean aesthetics of company including the clear casing for its Rouge Unlimited which let’s you see the lipstick for exactly what it is. Available online for $23 at Shu Uemura.

SANTA MARIA NOVELLA

When it comes to product design, we usually think modern sleek shapes, but this Italian apothecary company hasn’t broken stride with its old school patterned scrolling type and classic containers– and for good reason. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Available online at Lafco.

DIPTYQUE

This French brand has cornered the market on high-end, smells more expensive than your old cheapo candle home fragrance market. But more recently, Diptyque has been branching out into bath products; with its gorgeous typography and simple black and white design, the beautiful packaging is tough to resist. Available online at Diptyque.

BYREDO

With celebs angling for a piece of the fragrance market, being a cult perfumer like Stockholm-based Byredo isn’t the easiest of paths. But with a bottle this pleasingly simple, we’ll take a bit of Scandinavian design on our beauty counter any day. Available online at Byredo.

NARS

The award-winning Fabien Baron was behind the design of this smash hit. The genius lies in that it somehow manages to stay of the moment and classic at the same time. Available at Sephora.

PRADA

While it’s not quite the same as owning the latest Miuccia Prada-designed handbag, this gorgeous atomizer could assuage some of that pain and at a relatively friendly $117 (available at Sephora). It’s the perfect blend of new (sleek lines) and old (the heritage puffy atomizer), with some gilded glamour to boot. Of course there are other scents from the luxury brand as well, each coming in shapes with similar design principles.
