When I think of togas, I think of Angelina Jolie in her drapey one-strappers and gladiator sandals in Alexander, or for those less fashion-obsessed, Animal House. Designer Yasuko Furata has different thoughts in mind. Her Japanese label, TOGA, has quietly been dancing the line between avant-garde and wearable riche since 1997. Her latest collection for Fall/Winter 09 “Metal Machine Dress” features fur-edged collars, cashmere/wool coats and sheer paneling to create a new kind of body contouring. While I’m a sucker for beautiful textiles, Furata’s genius is how everything stays on trend (there are the eponymous padded shoulders for Fall) yet still looks different and fresh. Kirna Zabete and Liberty’s in London thought so too. Better start saving for that investment-worthy black wool coat come Fall.
