Empire of the Sun’s Adam Ant meets Labyrinth-style garb may work to grab your attention, but it’s their lush disco-pop that will maintain it. Formed by The Sleepy Jackson’s Luke Steele and Aussie electro-popper Nick Littlemore, the band are set to release what may already be one of 2009’s top releases. There’s more than a touch of Phoenix (quite evident on lead single ‘Walking On A Dream’, with soft 70s harmonies, while ‘Swordfish Hot Kiss Nite’ shows a Princely-proficient, synth-heaviness. The dreamy ‘Half Mast’, funk of ‘Delta Bay’ and ‘Standing On The Shore’ could collectively fill the void left by new Daft Punk and MGMT material, while Without You is a 10cc-style ballad with a touch of the aforementioned Purple One’s echoed vocals. While the album’s already been released in the UK, Americans will have to wait till April 9 to hear it. But don’t let that stop you from listening repeatedly to their Myspace tracks: http://www.myspace.com/empireofthesunsound
