The ten-story glass atrium, otherwise known as the Winter Garden, was filled with glistening eyes and hungry ears for an explosion of experimental electronic music featuring Mountains and Scanner for just one reason; to be swept away in a dreamlike sequence of electric waves. The echoing marble and high ceilings only added to the rush of a carefully constructed wall of sounds. Free mp3!

Robin Rimbaud - Scanner

Robin Rimbaud - Scanner

Robin Rimbaud, who works under the name Scanner, is an English musician who started regularly releasing innovative and unprecedented electronic albums in 1994. Hectically darting from filters, to a mixing board, to the laptop, and back again, Scanner led the hypnotized audience into his deepest pool of emotions.

The first set was highlighted by Scanner’s signature samples of cellular phone voicemails. The recognition of the voicemail interface – “press 1 to hear your new messages,” samples that need to be heard, not read – and human voices eventually transformed into static like noise, creating an illusion of panic and confusion which then lead into a loud and wild drum segment reminiscent of The Microphones’ track, “The Sun.”

River to River Festival continues their financial district infiltration tomorrow evening, again at the Winter Garden, with what should be an amazing show by Anthony Gonzalez of M83. Anthony will be performing an ambient set and the music will be accompanied by a video from New York-based artist Janet Biggs. Free mp3 below!
